Sun Ra was a famous jazz artist in the 20th century who contributed a lot to the development of Afrofuturistic and space music. His mysterious "cosmic philosophy" and contemplation of African people's special connections to the mysterious future have given his music unique power and charm. In this set of posters, I listened to his band's music and tried to decipher Sun Ra's words through my own feelings.
Afrofuturism
Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetics, a philosophy of science and history, that explores the developing intersection of African diaspora culture and technology.
In his self-directed movie Space is the Place, Sun Ra showed his contemplation on Afrofuturism to his audience. For Sun Ra, music cannot be separated from the theme of space, which represents the ultimate exploration of existence. In the movie, when Sun Ra was speaking to the black people in the community center, he said, "We are all myth. We do not exist in this society." On the one hand, it implies the injustice that groups like black people and females face in society. On the other hand, it provokes everyone to contemplate their existence in this world. Is Earth the ultimate place to remain in existence? The exploration of the universe might give us a hint and for Sun Ra, music is the fuel of his spaceship, as he mentioned in the movie.
